Intercoat Clear?

I've heard this term a few times on this site when it came to painting either metallics or candy colors, and was wondering what it was. Is it just the clear coat with the metallic or candy mixed in, or is a different formula? I just finished my 73' Beetle in Omni without a clearcoat, and was planning to use a base coat/clear coat for the next bug.

Tthis is a basecoat clear packaged by HOK under that name or in PPG as DBU or DBC 500 blending clear.For the purposes here it's used to make candy,pearls or protect color coats from further work.
