I think they were using auto mask (not sure, I've never used it). It's supposed to be the way to go nowadays. Only place I know to get it is Coast Airbrush. Their website is www.coastairbrush.com

I've used both frisket from art supply stores (it does come in different tacks and finishes, both gloss and mat, and the Gerber Auto Mask from Coast Airbrush. Both work great but the frisket will stretch on curved surfaces where the Auto Mask doesn't. It saves time but you have to be careful on curves and watch out for wrinkles.

K-Daddy at Kal Koncepts says the adhesive on the frisk can leave a weird almost marbelized effect on the paint that can't be controlled, anyone seen this?

they are actually "tape marks" common when using House of Kolor paint. they can be removed by sanding out or using a grey scotch pad, just be careful not to sand too much and ruin your paint. try using intercoat clear in between layers so you scuff the intercoat clear instead of the actual art work

What type of paint are you planning on using. I always use House Of Kolor. The have a spray that is liqiud mask as well. But remember the more you put on the more mils you're going to build up on. If you have never used it before, try using masking tape, and NO do not use wal mart brand tape. Stick with 3m. The reason being the cheaper the tape the least it will hold. Once the chemicals that in the paint hit this cheap tape, the have a tendency to peel. Remember you pay for what you get. If you plan on any designs. Then lay them put and use a razor blade to cut them out. Be careful not to much pressure, or you will ruin all that you have done. First spray your base, then apply intercoat clear, wait an hour then apply tape, draw out you design. And your final step it to clear coat.

A friend of mine decided to try Wal-Mart tape. I warned him he would regret it. He masked off a van he was shooting the bumper on, and every where he used that tape it left glue that he had to wipe off with lacquer thinner. And that glue is a real bitch to get off. I do use the masking plastic Wal-mart sells but it's applied over the qualitiy 3m 3/4" that I mask ALL my jobs with. And of course 3m 2" as well!

I used badger film Frisket.... I had some problems with it..... The glue can disolve into the paints.... And it can pull paint.

What I think that means is if the paint is fresh, and any one painting is likely to use freash paint, that solvents in the drying paint attack the frisket glue..... So these traped vapors then react with the glue and the paint it is trying to leave....

It can leave blotches that can be sanded out, providing you can sand that layer of paint....

The glue that remains can be removed with common rubbing alcohol... I called them as the glue turned to yer basic spider web...

They also said you can remove the paper for 30 minutes to let the film dry, so it won't stick so hard......Mac I know this is old, but maybe some will save a lot of hard work...

3M tapes, preferably green, or spray mask.
Clear friskets require to much knife pressure and leave anhesive which can cause paint discolor.

The masking system used is transfer tape. There are a number of different brands but you need to be careful and test them before using with urethane basecoats, or clears. Some brands use different adhesives that can react, or weak bonded paper that can bleed. The Automask by Coast Airbrush is designed specifically for automotive paints. You can contact them at (714)-635-5557 Good luck.

i used to use clear shelf liner paper, basically same thing as frisket paper, but like 1/4 the price. BUT last time i did airbrush work was in the early 90's using laquer and urethane . didnt have any problems with it bleeding or leaving residue.
