Hello Gunny,

I’m a pretty new so I don’t have a lot of answers, but I do know about the compressor and gun scenario. I started with a Devilbiss 20 gal compressor with a 5.5 HP motor and it worked fine with the HVLP guns. I use a mini gun for every thing but the primer. Its one of those 60 dollar harbor freight specials. I’ve been pretty happy with the results compared to the larger guns. I also have a Devilbiss Finish line and a Porter Cable gun (both HVLP) but I don’t use them much do to the consumption of paint. I do use the Porter Cable for nothing but primer now just because I like to keep the other guns for colors and clears and I don’t want to take a chance that some primer is left in the gun. I feel it just makes things easier because you’re not always screwing with the gun adjustments. I went to a 30 gallon Craftsman because it was gifted to me. It doesn’t have to work as hard as the Devilbiss but the Devilbiss should do fine as long as you’re not a production shop. For paint use what ever you can get advice locally on if possible. House of Kolor is pretty expensive but you can get it in smaller quantities at some online shops like coastairbrush.com or innate.com. Good luck!

This is what I have so far but the more I read the more questions I have.

DezVilbiss compressor
5.5 HP
20 Gal tank
20 feet 3/8" hose
125 PSI max
11.9 CFM
8.3 SCFM @ 40PSI
5.8 SCFM @ 90PSI
(have no idea what all the numbers mean but is this sufficient)
1. Can I use a mini gun for painting motorcycle parts or do I need a regular gun.
2 I understand a HVLP gun is okay for us garage painters.
3. Do I need a separate gun for primers and sealer or is there one gun who can handle primers, basecoats, clears.
4. Will I need a dryer/filter (I live in Phoenix)
5. HOK or PPG for first time painters.

Thanks for any assistance/suggestions you have to offer.
