I have restored motorcycles for a long time and I would now like to learn how to paint, possibly eventually doing some custom stuff. Can you do a reasonable job on tanks and fenders in your own garage without a paint booth? What is the best type of paint for a beginner to learn with. What would also be a good moderatly priced gun and minimum size of compressor. Any advice would be welcome!

welcome to the forum!!man, some of the most awesome paint jobs on cars and bikes i have seen have been done in garages, so,yes, it is possible. cleanliness is extremely important. it still amazes me how just a shot of air from my gun can stir up dust and dirt i missed. as for guns, well, i think you will get just as many suggestions on that as on what paint to use. personally, i upgraded to a devilbiss copper tekna( from a finishline, which was an upgrade from a startingline) a few months ago and use the dekups system with it. i can use either 9, 24, or 34 oz cups with it. it is an awesome gun, and with the dekups system i can shoot with the gun in any position, which helps with motorcycle tins. but i personally dont think there is a "best" gun or paint for a beginner. on the gun, though, spending some extra $$$ for a quality gun( devilbiss, iwata, sata,) is money well spent. there's gonna be a lot of advise form some very experienced people to come and i suggest ya listen to em. i didnt listen to a lot and had to learn some hard, expensive lessons.
