Layout Question

I have painted many things but, its usually just one theme like checkers, flames or a freehand thing. I am painting a helmet that I want all kind of things all over it including the above. I am beginning to try to make some money at this and thought I would do something special that I can knock on doors with. I could spend some time in photoshop laying it out or just kind of get a picture in my head and do it. Some of Fraser's work looks out of the blue. How do ya'll do it. Sorry for the general and subjective question, Just found this board and the problem is on my mind.

I get an idea of what I want in my head and then go for it. More times then not I will change my mind in the middle of a graphics layout. It seems to change depending on color combos and my mood. Sounds wierd but alot of times seeing the base color and main graphics in person will change the way your looking at the project and its outcome

. If your going to plan anything try some test panels first to get the feel of the layout.
