Lets talk intercoat clear .

Well last week I did my first marblize job , as in a past post I tried to create my own stuff and it failed so I purchased the proper stuff from a HOK supplier and they stated it had to be topcoated with intercoat clear so we got some as well . Now here is where I get confused , I always thought that intercoat clear was like a clear base but when I opened the can I was quite surprised , it looked just like a urethane clear that needed to be reduced , and the instructions said once applied it must be cleared within 2 hours or it must be scuffed which kinda confused me because it looked like clear how could it be sanded within 2 hours ? But I applied one coat anyways and left for 1 1/2 hours (went home for supper) when I came back , to my surprise the stuff was dry and dull which confusd the crap outta me . Because I left and never watched the stuff dry I want to know how long does it have to flash before it can be masked for a design or flames or whatever ? Another thing , can I use clear base coat in place of intercoat clear , would it have the same effect ?(not for marblizing but for flames and stuff) I have a feeling it may not because the intercoat seemed quite a bit thicker than clear base and would hide edges better but I thought I should at least ask . Heres a couple shots of how my first marblize job turned out .

You really don't want to sand the intercoat, espacially to use it for leveling grafix. If you don't go back over it with candy or top clear just scuff it with a grey scuffy to get adhesion for the next stuff. It's basically the same thing as base clear,it's just a little thicker than some.

Rex,Are you saying the intercoat is thicker therfore,it levels better?I'm assuming if you used a regular clear, you would have to use more coats to level?

The HOK tech manual for SG-100, actually shows 12 hours or scuff, not 2 hours. It also says you can tape within an hour, but I've taped in 10 minutes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif

It looks great. I saw on your other post, where you hadn't decided what to apply the look with. Did you go with the wal-mart bag or a saran wrap? Also did you marblize more than one coat? I going to try it, any advice ?

I did some spray out cards with the bags and with Saran wrap and I liked the Saran wrap look the best , but I will keep the other technique in my mind for other projects . I tried about 5 different types of plastic wrap because I thought the Saran wrap I had was not the right kind but as it turned out it worked the best out of all of them. Just one time , one coat withthe Lilac/Lilac marblizer over a pearl black base.
Newbie , you've taped over SG-100 within 10 minutes ? WOW .

Jim,what I meant was the HOK intercoat is probably thicker than what the auto refinish lines have for intercoat but you really don't want to use it for leveling, especially since HOK says don't use any more than 3 or 4 coats of it.It's main purpose is protecting the base from tapelines or metallics and pearl grafix from shifting when topcoating. The best thing to use for leveling the surface is still topcoat clear.

If you weally want me to screw with your head there are circimstances to use the intercoat to lose the edge but I very rarely do it,topcoating and sanding is much easier to me and adds to the depth.

Rex,I've probably read 75% of your posts, you screw with my head enough, thank you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gifStill like your down to earth answers though. No matter how silly the questions from newbies, you still answer them with respect.I've been messing around with paint for almost 2yrs now and know when I post something,it gets answered pretty quick.I remember when Scott was answering most of the posts. You guys have alot of good painters willing to help now,I bet scott never though this board would get this big! Thanks,Jim /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

you use big pieces, and just lay it across the surface. You can ball it up if you want to, but IMHO you get about the same results and much quicker to spray the piece, cover it in saran wrap, rub it down, then remove it all at one time.

There are ALL kinds of things you can do with marbilizer.

Plus I have 3 to 4 different brands of plastic wrap and I feel the cheaper the wrap the better the texture in the marbilizer.
Usually the cheap wrap is smoother than Saran Wrap®. If you look close at Saran Wrap there's a texture in it. You can use aluminum foil, thicker plastic wrap you find at the hardware store etc.

You can lay pieces of whatever in sections over Marbilizer. Remove it quickly for one texture, or leave it on for 20 minutes and then rip it off for another texture. My favorite is to lay the plastic wrap on and then ssssslide it off the part you marbilized. It makes a really cool texture!

You have to cover marbilizer with SG-100 or Adhereto for adhesion of top coat or other layers that will be applied over it.

What's up with the new freaking graemlins? feaky man, freaky! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon_wave222.gif
