Limit to # of clear coats?

Is there a limit to the number of topcoats of clear? Just curious. I just started polishing my UFC-35 topcoat and my wife asked why didn't I put three more coats on.

She though it seemed like clear coat was cheap insurance against chips and the like. First, I matter of factly told her "This is how you do it!" But then, after she left the garage, I thought, "why not put three more coats on?"

Also, if it won't screw the job up to shoot three more coats, what should I do about the areas I already used polishing glaze? Soapy water? then wetsand again?

Thanks.

Actually you get to a point of thickness with paint or clear that it'll chip easier because it's so thick.Ideally you want the #of coats of clear the manufacturer says at the end of sanding and reclearing and buffing. If I'm going over a single base I put 3 coats of 2coat clear on and then sand and buff.If I'm doing 2tones or grafix I use whatever I need to sand the clear flat over the tape lines, then lay the 3 on.If I think there's plenty of clear at the thinnest point after sanding I'll just use the required 2 (PPG system).
