Looking to match a paint color

So I went down to my local auto parts store chain and picked up 7 cans of Duplicolor paint that have an OEM vehicle manufactures code on them close to the color I am looking for.
I Finally pick one color and now I want a quart of it except Duplicolor does not make up quarts.
I went to my auto paint store to mix up a quart of the oem mfg color code. They used a PPG code to match it up and it is not even a close match.
So, how can I get someone to match a quart of the Duplicolor or at least a panel I have painted of it.

The jobber that gave you the PPG code should also have a Prophet machine which is basically a camera that reads sprayed out colors & creates a formula from scratch. Hope that helps!

Not for sure why it didn't match. Possibly there is a 'variance' of the color. Normally these are very close, but just some shades off from one another. But overall as long as you gave them the correct color code, it should have been pretty close to your example.

Also, as long as you did your spray can test panel over a realistic base color
i.e. you can take a solid red spray can and spray it over a white base and a black base and even though it's the same red, the shades will be completely different.
Or, let's say you took a medium blue metallic spray can and sprayed it over raw metal. This will most likely be brighter than the actual color.

sometime with the oem paint it won't match. Particularily if the paint on the vehicle is a few years old. Fading etc. It might be better to take a small part in such a the gas filler door and have them match that. How old is the paint your trying to match.

You didn't mention if you sprayed out a test panel either. Did you just do a spray can test panel and then just compare the mixed paint 'in a can'. Sometimes what you see mixed in a can is different than what you see when it's sprayed through a gun

That's it. I sprayed 4 layers on the board so it was solid. but the paint in the can was applied with a brush.

Yes, that would make a difference. Especially if it's a metallic or pearl type paint. Since the spray can is sprayed out, the other paint will also have to be sprayed out.
