Marble or Faux Hammer Finish?

I've got a paint effect I have to try to match for some accessories on a 2009 Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle. It appears to be a marble effect but it is unlike any of the marble effects I have ever done or can remember seeing. Maybe more of the hammertone finish. The color is not the issue, the effect itself is. I've tried everything from dropping solvent in the wet finish to applying with saran wrap and even using a sea sponge. I still haven't come up with what I would consider to be an acceptably similar effect. I have PPG materials at hand. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Never seen anything like that.
I wonder if you took a spray bottle with water and sprayed a very fine mist on the panel. Then put a light coat of black or whatever color. Then wipe the water off. Possibly something like that.

I have already tried that. It didn't come close. The more I've been trying to research and figure this paint out, the more I'm believing that it is a hammer finish of some sort. I've found numerous photos of random pieces that people have sprayed with hammer finish paint and it creates the same effect. My question is how did Harley get this to look so three dimensional and still bury it in the clear?

i was thinking that too at first, but don't know. Maybe they had some cloth and held it away from the tins and sprayed through that lightly. i've seen somewhat that type of patturn on fabrics, but the smooth edges lead me to believe they held it away from the tins and sprayed black over the silver. but i don't know?

Funny!!! I had tried this about 30 minutes prior to you posting and it came out perfect! :moon:

I still have to tweak the color a little but the effect is there! I will post photos and more of the process later.

the reason i called for anti static was it has a very slow flash time.regular prep wash might do the same thing only you might have to be quick applying the base. good luck.cyas

in contrast, the reason I used the anti-static was because it had a very quick flash time due to the high alcohol content. result was excellent.

yep thats a hammertone finish. Which you can buy in rattle cans. Another way to get this effect it to do the wet look trick. Do your base then spray water on the surface to form droplets. Then come back and lightly shoot a darker color over top of the water and let the water evaporate. Now take a soft cloth and very lightly press the cloth into those high lites. You may have to fool with this a little to get the perfect effect your after. But since those high lites are very fragile you should be able to get what your after. Hope this helps.
