Masking Tape

I recently painted some rims in which I masked off the machined face with green masking tape. I painted the rims this crazy off-white color but when I started to remove the tape I noticed that it was picking up the edges a little on the paint. How can I combat this problem in the future?

As long as you primed it, before painting and clearing, not for sure why this happened.
A way to help prevent this is, to mask up the complete area except about 1/16" all the way around the edge. Once you get it masked off, lay some fineline to finish off the edge. As soon as you are done painting, pull the 1/8" off. Leave the rest of the mask on until the paint is dry. Then you can remove it once it's dry.
The 1/8" fineline will also leave a nice crisp edge.

Thanks TAZ, I guess I was a little too flush with my edges. I was using the green masking tape, is this the appropriate tape for spraying or is there something better?

Green tape is fine to use when you are masking up to paint.
But if you are painting another set of rims or any place else that is very tight to the paint, you can use the tip I mentioned above.

10psi this may help you down the road. Where would we be with out masking tape? Pretty difficult to outline our flame designs with out it. For years custom painters have been using blue fine line tape. It seems to have been the primary masking tape. Well there’s a fairly new tape out there. It’s called Colad. Which is manufactured in the Netherlands In my opinion it’s much superior to what I’ve been using, blue fine line It’s half the mill thicknesses, no creep back, and no adhesive transfers. You can mask around a dime and have it stay there. This is particularly important, especially when you’re laying out a tight design. This tape is perfectly flat, with absolutely crown to it. So you will end up will very little tape edge. Not so with the other tape. You can leave this tape applied for weeks with no adverse effects.

One other nice thing is that it is half the price of the other. It’s available in 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 widths. You can get it from Innate
I’ve mentioned this product before. But that was sometime ago, and though it was worth mentioning it again. Some of the new members may have missed it. You can also read a few of the reviews from some CPF members that, have used it.
