Matching paint

I am trying to match the paint on a new Harley which is painted Sierra Red over Silver. On the HOK color chart it looks like Apple Red over Orion Silver is pretty close. Does anyone know how many coats of red I should spray over the silver? Has anyone tried to match this color before? The local dealer won't give us the color code. He says a good painter should be able to match it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbutt.gif

Sounds like your dealer is a d!ck but you have the name so it doesn't matter.Sierra red isn't a tri-stage color according to my database though,is it 2 tone red and silver or is it all red but based silver first?

It is two tone. I'm thinking it was silver first color then masked off then sprayed red over the silver.??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Yeah, that's it,they shoot the whole thing silver and if it's going to be a 2tone they just add that on top.

The helmet that I'm painting is suppose to match a guy's 2004 Fatboy with the Teal/Silver two tone combo. The helmet is already silver but I was planning on priming it and then using the teal paint. Based on the above statements, would I be better of just scuffing the helmet and adding the teal, without the primer? Will the primer effect the teal basecoat that much?

Thanks-Stretch

If the silver is is in great shape just sand it and add the teal.No sense in wasting primer and adding to the thickness if you don't have to.
