I started my paint job today. After applying my base coat. A metalic silver base, It started to lift off in some places. Kind of looked like marbelizing in places. Does anyone know why this happened. I thought I did all steps corectly. I finally after sanding again got most of the peices to do all right. I had to completely reseal the tank. I am waiting on dry time right now to try the base coat again. Any help on this would be good. Thanks, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbutt.gif

What brand of paint? Sounds like to me you let your sealer dry to long. When it lifted, did it lift from the primer or sealer?

I am using all HOK paints, and I think it did come up from the primer. The sealer was dry for less than an hour. the base on the last part I painted last night became rearough. Probably going to order more paint and do over.

I've had this happen in the past and it was attributed not letting the parts dry long enough in between systems. My shop is make shift and the temperature stays a bit lower that recommended so I now just wait much longer than required and have not had any issues in years. That was a hard lesson to learn but glad it happened early on. Hope that helps.

did the paint actualy lift off in flakes?. the marble efect sounds like a reaction.base coat is basicaly a laquer.if you put it on an enamle type primer that may happen.be sure to use a two part primer.or epoxy wich may be a pig to sand.
