Metal Flake

This may seem like a dumb question, but I want a black tank
with silver metal flake flames.Where do I begin.Black base then mask out the flames, then flake.Or do the flakes first
over the area I want the flames on then clear, mask out the flames and shoot the black base. How do you get a clean separation between the flames and the base.I do have a flake buster.Hope this makes sense.

I would lay down the black base, shoot an intercoat clear - scuff, tape out, intercoat clear, flake, intercoat clear - scuff, pinstripe, top flow coat clear.

I tried flake on intercoat clear but the clear dried to fast and I had to use top coat clear to get it to work. Did I do something wrong with the intercoat clear?

Burnt,
Have been in touch with OSF.They said not to use intercoat clear, dries too fast.Use your top clear coat. They also suggested to apply the flake first. Then the base.If you do the base first then the flake.Other wise when you pull the tape from your flaked area you will get jagged edges you'll have to clean up with a razor blade.Don't like that idea too much.Hope this helps.Brian.

Hi Burnt,
Top coat clear is generally best for adding flakes but you can do it with the intercoat clear. I've done it with the flake buster and intercoat clear but you have to be fast and most important, add some HOK retarder to the intercoat clear. It'll keep it from drying so fast.
Good luck,
Phil
