More on Orange Peel

I saw somewhere on here that HVLP is not really good for shooting clear. I'm not very experienced in this field to begin with, but I just shot clear on a piece with an HVLP gun (before I read that) and whoever wrote that......man I wish I had read that first. I have a ton of sanding to do. It could, however, just be me as this is only the third bike I have painted.

I would, like so many others, like to offer my praises to all on this site who have helped me learn so much. From my first project, I started getting work. I now have two more lined up. I just do this stuff for fun.

I'm no pro, but I use an HVLP gun with clear coats all the time, and it works fine. I find that I turn up the liquid volume more than with base coat, but it goes on quite well. Very little sanding needed. Just enough to remove any lint, etc. Try fooling with your settings, particularly the paint volume valve.

I'll try playing with it.

I do have another question though, I have sanded quite a bit on the clear and still have a little of the peel there. I'm afraid that I'll go too far with the sanding. Can I just shoot another coat or two of clear on top of that? Will it fill in the small dimples or will the clear bridge and cause more problems?

TIA,
Kyle

I'm glad to see that there is a technical term for "fixing my screw up".

CLEARING WITH HVLP IS POSSIBLE. GUN SET UP IS VERY IMPORTANT. EVEN MORE IMPORTANT IS AIR SUPPLY. MATERIAL IS ATOMIZED WITH AIR VOLUME, NOT PRESSURE LIKE CONVENTIONAL GUNS. WHEN SETING GUN PRESSURE MAKE SURE IT IS WITH THE TRIGGER PULLED COMPLETELY. THE GUN MUST HAVE ENOUGH AIR SUPPLIED TO ALLOW FOR ATOMIZATION. I HAVE A DEVILBISS MILLENIUM IT REQUIRES 15.5 CFM WHICH IS A LOT OF AIR VOLUME, AS SOON AS YOU PULL THE TRIGGER AIR PRESSURE AT THE REGULATOR DROPS ABOUT 75PSI. I USE 1/2" PIPE AND FILTERS AND USE 3/8" I.D. HOSE WITH HIGH FLOW DEVILBISS FITTINGS AND A 16.9 CFM COMPRESSOR. I CAN SPRAY 2.1 V.O.C. HIGH SOLIDS CLEAR LIKE GLASS WITH A 1.3MM TIP AND 30PSI AT THE GUN (WITH THE TRIGGER PULLED). IF YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ENOUGH AIR, AND IT STILL WON'T ATOMIZE, CRANK UP THE PRESSURE UNTIL IT ATOMIZES. REMEMBER THAT THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE IS THE PRESSURE THAT THE GUN IS ALLOWED TO OPERATE AT WHILE REMAINING TREE HUGGER COMPLIANT. THE ACTUAL MAX AIR PRESSURE THAT THE GUN CAN HANDLE IS USUALLY PRINTED ON THE HANDLE IN BAR (SNEEKY). I HAVE TWO HVLP DEVILBISS GUNS THEY BOTH HAVE ENGRAVED ON THE SIDE: MAX 7BAR (101PSI). AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU REDUCE THE CLEAR TO THE MAX THAT IS ALLOWED.

Much gracias for the input. I apparently still have much to learn. Just when you think you know everything there is to know (after a couple of paint jobs)....

Gun setup is obviously a huge issue and something that is easily overlooked by the beginner.

Thanks again

Easiest way to cure an prange peel problem with an HVLP gun is to slightly lower the air pressure while you bump up the % of reducer you're using...bump it up in small increments while shooting some test panels and you should find one that works for you

Flow coating is only good for laquer. If your using urethanes you will have to sand the surface to accept the fresh clear. I have painted hundreds of tanks and there is always something no matter how small, (dust, fish eyes, orange peel) so apply enough clear and cut and polish your final product.
