motorcycle hemlet issues bad ones!

I airbrushed some names on motorcycle helmets and then clear coated with a spray can of urethane, sherwin williams kind. In spots I am having a crackle type reaction to the hemlet itself, not where I painted the names. What am I doing wrong and how can I maybe fix it? I am totally new to all of this and don't do enough at one time to mix up the clear. That is why I tried the route and it's lookin' like it's unsuccessful.

Did you scuff the entire helmet to give the clear something to bite to? Could you have put it on too thick? Those are my two ideas about why it'd crackle.

Did you check the type of material the helmet is made of? sometimes certain paints aren't compatable with the helmet

I think I added too much too soon,
clear on the crackle issue. I was able to smooth it out and disguise it with some airbrush graphic. and then new light coat. Did fine. When I wrote that I was ready to slit my throat and end the day! haha I stepped back at the end of the day, with new knowledge and realized it didn't turn out as bad as first thought. BUT, I learned something!

If you used a waterbased airbrush paint and then cleared to soon and to heavily, this will cause some major cracking issues. As you have found out, rattle can clears need to be laid down in this but wet coats.
