Mud question

I think someone suggested the following for bare metal;

Etch prime
epoxy
mud
filler and epoxy over that
Then paint

Why not just goto mud on bare metal first and then follow with filler and epoxy primers???

Thanks for any help

You don't have to etch if you use epoxy primer,Just 80grit the body first.the new fillers are great but don't feather very good on bare metal.Also,epoxy prevents rust by blocking out moisture,it doesn't absorb water like regular primers.So,you'll never have rust forming under your filler.Epoxy doesn't stop rust, it just won't let any moisture get to the metal to form new rust,so make sure you get All the rust off first.

Like Jim said,you can mud over steel but it really isn't the best.Epoxy it,do your mudwork then use your filling primer to final it out.Mud doesn't really like to stick to the galvanized coating on most parts now and down here when you hit bare steel you need to do something with it fast.Mud sticks great to raw steel but any chance it gets to absorb moisture it will and the steel will rust and bubble the mud.I still see older mud jobs with rust underneath when you grind it off to restraighten the panel (caught a few of mine too).
