multi layer flake question

Hi people....any help for this would be great!

Basically to keep this simple, let's say that I need to paint a panel in .015 red flake and have some gold stars painted in .015 flake as well.

Should I finish one flake over the entire panel then mask and do the second color for the stars? - I'm concerned that this will be very hard to flatten out and that the finish will end up extremely thick. A flake job on top of another one!

or

Mask before the first flake and reverse mask to do the second flake color, so that the build is pretty even. - This sounds better to me, but I don't know the type of products that will allow me to mask over flake before any clear has been applied.

:ears: Please Help!!!!

Here is how I would do it. I know it's not one of your choices. But I would think you would want to do it the best and easiest way and still get a super look to it.
They ways you had it listed sounds like you want to keep putting on the flake. I don't see how you'll get a nice crisp edge on the stars by putting the flake on in one of your above choices.

Here is the way I would do it...

Doing it this way would also make the flake even more richer and deeper looking.

I would spray the panel in gold flake (or silver flake), then clear.
Then I would sand to flatten down.
Then I would mask up the stars.

Then I would paint candy red over the gold flake for the base color.
Remove the mask from the stars, then add one coat of candy gold over the candy red and the stars.
Then clearcoat
This will give you a nice candy red flake base with candy gold flake stars.
Using silver flake instead of gold flake would make both the base and the stars brighter.

Thanks for the reply!
I had thought of that as well, and I agree that it makes more sense.
The only thing is that the customer wants it to have lots of sparkle and that large flake chunky look.

Will the candies kill the sparkle?

Just a tad bit, but it will definitely give it a more 'rich' look since it's a candy and not just plain flake. You'll still see the sparkle for sure though!
