JIm, if you are going to epoxy prime, you really dont use a etch prime. A Epoxy primer like PPG s DP 40 is the best as far as i know of. i dont mean to push PPG but i have used it for the past 10 years or so and its pretty much the only system i know, other systems may me diffrent, i remeber using DuPont years ago and you were suposed to use there etch primer but i dont know the system now.AS far as the rest goes you are heading in the right direction and you should end up with a high quality paint job. You know where to find us if you need any more info.

Covered. The only thing I can add is usually if you wetsand the base it's recommended to blow a quick coat back over it before you clear.I agree with this because if you level out a dirt nib the next coat will cover it with color.3-5 coats equalling less than a mil sounds aweful low but I have't used the stuff.Starting from steel you'll be well below a thickness to worry about.

Although not ready to paint yet,I have a question about paint thickness. This is on a car,I'm going to strip it to bare metal, etch prime, epoxy prime do body work, reprime, paint red over a white base and clear it.I would like to go over a white base to make the red "pop" and get better coverage. No candy,no pearl just straight red.HOK says 3-5 coats is only 3/4 of a mil. Will I be ok with this or am I getting too thick?I'll probably give it about 5 or 6 coats of clear, sand the peel out (that's the reason for so many coats of clear)and buff.

One more question - this may open a can of worms but,is it ok to wetsand the base before clearing?I did wetsand the base on my bike, just to insure no peel,It looked great, absolutely no peel and the black looked a mile deep.just like a mirror.Has anyone wetsanded the base and seen the job years later?

Thanks again Guys,I say HOK because I only painted once, used all HOK products and was very happy with the results.I know how to mix it and what you can and can't get away with.I forgot to mention, that I did spray a light dusting after I wetsanded.I Read EZ's post about that way back when.I found out for myself that the clear will melt the light peel but,I had a few spots I was unsure of so,I sanded it.Is there any downside to wetsanding the base?I used Painters Pride prep after I wetsanded and still beat my 1 hr. window.I can't wait to start rippin the chevelle apart!!!! P.S. I haven't heard from Scott,I hope he's too busy makin money!Congrats on your moderator status REX.

Thanx Jim.The only down side I see to sanding the base is it adds time to the job,but if you're not doing it for $ it isn't cutting into yur profit margin.I'm not sure how HOK works with their recoat window but PPG base has 24hrs before you have to scuff and recoat, but you can also do it anytime before that.Of course you need to let it dry enough so you can sand it without the paper digging in-yeah I've done it
