Mural Paints?

I have been using the Auto Air paints for all of my mural work. I use either Sherman Williams or Dupont Chroma Base for my base coats. I know there is a controversy over the Auto Air vs urethanes for graphics and murals. If I want to use urethanes, what do I want to use? I know HOK makes it very easy to use their line for everything. I was wondering what the equivalents in other brand were (i.e. Dupont and PPG etc.)

Just use the basecoat colors. If you don't clear first it helps to lay a coat of intercoat clear down before and after the artwork.

Thanks for the info rex. Would I have to change the mixing ratios or add anything extra to the paints for use in my airbrush?

I would use uro's in the same way you do now with acrylics. Most folks that I talk with use the auto air for detail with the paint brush. You can't paint brush with uro very well at all. And you need to be careful cause some stripping enamels, like 1 shot, will wrinkle the clear

Airartist…here’s what I do when I airbrush mural work. I use Dupont & HoK for my base coat paint. I then use basic colors & my preference is HoK now for their vibrant solid graphic colors for airbrushing murals. It’s recommended to reduce your paint 1 to 1 ratio for airbrushing (1 part reducer equals the 1 part of paint). I add a couple drops of HoK retarder too sometimes to get the paint to flow smoother (especially white for some reason). It’s a bit costly to purchase the colors you need for murals at first, but the paint goes along way through an airbrush. I mainly bought the primary & secondary colors, plus black and white to begin my mural work. Also Kandy Koncentrates from HoK work great for creating colors over your light & dark airbrush work.

Check out coastairbrush.com for smaller quantities of paint and Kandy Kons. That’s where I go when I don’t want to purchase a full quart of paint.
