i have built a minichopper (1/2 size) and it time to paint tank and fenders: fabbed tank from fiberglass and it is ready for basecoat, black.

what i want to do is incorperate gold flake on the black with clearcoat, sand and prepare for ghost flames in silver.
this is where flames questions begin:
1)i want them to start light silver metalic then fade into the base(black gold flakes)..what do i use paint or pearl?
2)could silver metallic base, mixed with clear obtain a see through finish?

3)if there is any info based on the above, please post links or provide concise info.

This really isn't an answer but, because both will work and you'll get two differant looks with the paint and pearl, do some test panels to see which you like better.Jim

i really dont want to buy any pearl..costs and all..
so one could use silvermetallic base say 5-1 with clear? or would one just reduce the silvermetalic say 5-1 with thinner? (as a starting point)would this then be somewhat see through, when applied?

yes to test panels

If your set on doing one or the other,I would try the silver metallic in the clear, your making your own candy so to speak. Not sure what it'll look like but, that's what test panels are for.

is that the answer i was looking for?...the base silver into base clear(or clear coat?) is then candy (semi-transparent)..all are ppg products so they should be compatable

I hope it was the answer your looking for.It would be better to use an intercost clear like HOK makes.Regular clear coat will work but, you'll have a pretty thick tape line to bury in the final clear.Jim

thanks jims,
since i last posted, i have acquired (FREE), five pearls, 3 8oz of blue/green,yellow, green,(not sure,i think HOK, but painter tells me that it can be used with any clear) 2 ozs, gold and blue...powder ppg..everytning on hold slight delay (working).. using your advice about intercoat. i will setup test panels late next week. using this teckique for test
base black, then one clear coat,(in case of mistake, ican remove flames), using the above materials PPG 2grams(1/8teaspoon) of powder to 2oz of intercoat clear, (start light mix, can always add more), the liquid pearls(need advice here) about 1/4 oz to 2 oz clear?...flames will be free hand for test panels...i have drawn computer stencils for actual flames...would this be the basic concept? perhaps someone could elaborate on mixing pearls?

With pearl in the clear, less is more meaning the more you spray, the darker it gets. Also if you try to get complete coverage with one coat, your likely to cause what looks like a run,it's when you blow the pearls too close together.Go with several light coats.Test panels!!!,jim
