Need help with clearcoat please!

I'm new to painting and it's really only something I thought I'd try myself to put a custom look on my motorcycle. I know next to nothing about paint and clears. I was going to use the Duplicolor Paint Shop stuff. I sprayed several coats of white on the tank (paint completely removed, sanded and primered) and the fenders (ABS Plastic, sanded, primered). But then I read somewhere that the Paint Shop Clearcoat was a laquer and as such, would be destroyed with the first drop of gasoline spilled on the tank. No Bueno! I went ahead and ordered a urethane clear online which has to be mixed. I have a:think1: few questions.

First, can I use the urethane over the already cured laquer paint or do I have to scrap that and use a urethane paint? What would happen if i did use it over laquer?

Second, I want to put some graphics on the bike. Can I put a few coats of clear on and let it cure, then paint the graphics on, then put several more coats of clear on? Will it adhere and cure properly or will I just waste my clear and my time? The look I am going for is some graphics of one color on the base and some letters sandwiched in clear to give them a floating look. Anybody ever done something like that?

I don't need the paint job to last for ten years, but I don't want it to look like crap or deteriorate in short order.

Thnks for any advice
