Hi, I am brand new to this forum and was wondering if i could get some advice on painting some new fenders for my softail. The fenders are front and rear bare stamped steel from Russ Wernimont. I started by prepping them with wax/grease remover then windex followed by a tack cloth rub down. I then applied a thin coat of metal glaze over the entire fenders and sanded that smooth up to 320 grit. The next step i was going to do was shoot a few coats of 2k primer and block with 400-500 and then shoot base and clear. I am going with the dupont chroma jet black. Should i seal the 2k before i shoot my base is what i am wondering? I have painted 4 vehicles for myself and friends in the past, but never fresh steel aftermarket parts. Are the steps i am taking sound right or should i have taken a different approach? Would it be possible for me to spray and etch coat then the 2k and sand that down without using the metal glaze? I am just looking for a little advice from someone who knows about the steps you need to take to paint aftermarket tins. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Welcome to the CPF.

I would suggest just wiping the fenders down with lacquer thinner just to remove any oil that were on them when they were shipped.
Then take 180 DA over the complete fender.
Do any minor bodywork you have (do not touch the surface)
Then prime
block with 320 dry paper
seal with black
paint your base
clearcoat
wetsand and buff

:luck:

Thanks for the reply, i really appreciate it. When you say seal with black, whats a good sealer i could use thats fairly reasonably priced?
