Needle size

Burnt

Is a 1.3mm good for spraying primer or should I use a larger size like 1.8mm? When I spray my primer it is extremely dry and really pitted. It won't spray wet but is almost dry when it hits the part. My needle is about 1.3mm I think. It is an old gun and I don't have any paper work on it. The nozzle hole measures out about .050 which is 1.27mm. I never have been able to spray any prime with any success and I think I am using to small a needle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

I've sprayed primer with a 1.3mm before without a problem. I've found the 1.5mm to be almost too big for helmets and smaller parts. Sounds to me like you don't have enough paint getting to the tip. Trying sending more paint out or lowering the pressure.

In my experience a 1.3 is definately too small for primer. Great for sealer, base, and clear, but not primer. Most primers nowadays are HIGH solids. I use a Sata primer gun with a 1.7 top, and I believe they go up to a 1.9 on that particular gun. I would reccomend something like that. Sata primer gun is like, $250 so for me thats not much cuz I use it numerous times a day, but for the hobbyists, I dunno. I'm sure you could pick something up online with a bigger needle/aircap setup for $100 or less. Good luck!!
