Has anyone tried the 3m dry sanding primer system yet? Just curious on how well it works on bikes with all the rounded edges. Also thought the PPS (Paint Prep system) was pretty cool. I don't need it because I'm just a hobbyist but it looks like it could help out a shop. Check out this link 3m solutions click on the dry sanding system and the PPS system links. Also to the right they have a video library that has some demos.

We use both systems at our shop, the interface pad (foam pad) inbetween the DA and the sand paper works pretty good for preping. Nothing really new about it though.

The disposable paint cup liners work great, but are very expensive. We still use them because I work in a large shop and the liners drop us from a large generater, to a small generater of waste. Plus you can spray completely upside down, and that comes in handy.

I've used the system with 1200 but any dirt nibs really need to be leveled out first. For paint prep they work pretty good but I still prefer my Hutchins.

Austin, try the 2mil sandwich ziplocks, they're basically the same thing and cheaper.

Rex, I guess I'm not sure what you mean. Are you referring to a differant system, or do you just mean to replace the "cup" portion of the 3M system with a sandwich bag? I don't think you can get just the lid from 3M.
thanks,

I couldn't get the page then to see the cup system.I usually don't use them but I was talking about the liners you put in a normal gravity feed cup like the DeVilbiss ones. All it is is a sandwich ziplock bag you put on the cup and drive a nipple through the bag into the feed hole in the bottom of the cup. When you're done hold the gun upside down and pull the bag out, then there's just a trickle of paint to clean up.Sorry about the confusion.

Ya thats a differant system. One of my friends used that for a while.
The 3M one is a pretty cool system. It acually replaces the cup. It has a reusable hard plastic cup and ring. You take the empty cup insert a disposable liner into it, them mix your paint (primer, clear, whatever) right in the cup. You then snap on the disposable lid to the liner, then thread on the ring onto the cup so the cap cannot come off. Hold your paint gun upside down push the gun down then a 1/4 turn to lock in place (3M supplys the screw on adapter for the top of the gun). Hook up your air line, hold the gun upide down, pull the trigger till paint starts coming out then start painting.
Like I said I think its a great system, but at about $1.50 per cup it adds up (you use 3-5 cups per job). The gain is like mentioned before you use much less thinner to clean, plus the only thing you need to through away is uncatalized products (like base coat) just let clear, sealer, and primers dry in the cup, once they are dry you can just toss them in the garbage.
