Welcome to the forum! Be sure and do quite a bit of research on not only painting, bodywork and prep, but also running a business. You may also want to check out the new EPA laws that will be in effect Jan 10, 2011.

I wish you the best though.

ah, okay....guess I misread that or something. Sounded like 'you' were starting a new business and didn't know anything about painting.

Anyway, the one thing I learned about auto body tools, is if you buy the cheap one's, they're good for a while, but you'll end up going through them pretty fast, especially if you do this full time.
Also, their performance is less than par.

If you have more questions, feel free to post them, but in the correct category so other members can see your questions and the replies to them.

You don't need to concern yourself with buying spray guns right now. The first thing you need to start looking for is a compressor. Nothing happens without a compressor. Don't play around with junk and do not waste your money on a small one - that is all the advice I can give you. When you get it come back and ask 'what's next' because then you get the long tutorial on laying out an air system.

These are the basics - nothing good happens without them.

Yep my partner has real big compressor he's giving me. I was thinking the same way Taz but then again if those spray guns can get me through a couple jobs i'll have my money to get some better ones.

Don't do it. You will just be wasting money and time. Buy 1 good gun, used if you must, but do not throw money out the window on half-a$$ed tools.

This may sound like an old fart just making old fart noises, but there used to be a guy named Demming who orchestrated the rebuilding of industrial Japan after the second world war. Demming was a genious. Demming also had some simple rules to follow in the establishment of a system - one of them bears repeating here. Demming said "avoid false starts". By that he meant to avoid doing exactly what you are proposing to do - buy the wrong tool to start with just to get you going (a false start) knowing full well what you need is a tool more suitable to your task. This is mighty good advice to carry through to everything you do.

To do acceptable quality custom painting you need three things. First you need well developed technique, then you need high quality tools, and finally you need first quality materials. The first one takes time, but the second too are available to you right from the start.
