New Some Advice On My First Flame Job

I'm getting ready to do a tank and fender flame job on my 2002 V-Star. The factory paint is black and I want to do some one color shadow flames (probably in yellow or light orange). Once I've got my airbrushing and masking technique to a point where I think I can do a good job, I want to begin airbrushing. What are the basic steps I should follow? Do I need to wet sand the clearcoat on the entire tank and fenders, or can I just scuff up the areas to be painted? Once the flames are laid down, can I go over just those areas with clear, or should I clear the entire tank and fenders? I guess you can tell by all my questions I'm a real newbie at this. I'd really like to try this myself rather than just sticking on some vinyl flame graphics.

After that I'm sure all the other Guru's on this board will be glad to help.

Link should be on the top of the page.
