New Tin

Hey Guys great site. You've answered so many questions that I didn't even get a chance to ask yet. Now I have my own question. When starting off with new tin, what steps need to be taken before you spray on your primer to insure that it will stick? I have a '90 model FATBOY that has vinyl flames and they aren't cleared over so I'mn getting all new sheet metal and going to do it myself. This is my first project so I'm sure I'll be in touch pretty regular. I've been practicing taping off the flames and have got that part down. So I think I'm ready to tackle this project. I have most of the materials I'll need(I think). I have to be through by the end of May for the R.O.T. rally in AUSTIN. I think that's enough time to do this project barring any complete disasters. Again this is a great site and have enjoyed reading all the tips. Thanks Eddie

Welcome Eddie. If oyu get factory tin it'll come primed but if you get aftermarket pieces they'll probably come in bare steel slimed with oil and need a day or 2's worth of bodywork to straighten out.The factory primer can just be sanded and sealed for painting but the raw ones will need quite a bit of work to get to a primer.Any money you save between HD and aftermarket will be spent somewhere in the prepping. The timeframe you set sounds like plenty of time if you get on it and do it on the weekends and a few nites after work.
