Hey guys, I am new to the paint scene but I have some questions on where I should be looking on this website. I am the type of person that will research before I dive into a project. So here is my problem:

About a year ago I had my 97 Honda Prelude painted at a body shop. Little did I know that this would end up being a horror story. Long story short, The shop didn't paint the car like they were supposed to and I basically was screwed out of my money. I have a custom red an black interior so I decided that I wanted to have a black paint job with red flakes to accent my interior. The end result was that the car looks semi-purple at certain angles and red at others.

The paint that was used was a Mercedes Obsidian Black with red flakes added into the mix. My problem is that I have a fiberglass bumper, which I wished they made in polyurethane, and the paint started chipping after two months because of New England weather. The shop owner was very unprofessional about the situation and was trying to make me pay to repaint the car after paying $3000.

Well I just wanted to know what are the basics of painting and if you guys can point me in the right direction to where I should look I would appreciate it. I do have a compressor that I purchased from Sears for about $300. Would that be enough for starter to paint my fiberglass bumper and potentially my car? Oh, and the compressor that I have is a 33 gallon Craftsman compressor.

thanks for the reply. I wanted to tackle this on my own potentially because I'm pretty handy and learn things pretty quickly. I also have a spare bumper which I could work on and practice. What sites, books, etc. should I look at to help me with this project. I just need a little direction so I can start off. You gotta start off somewhere.

Hi H. a book i found a big help wen i started was custom paining techniques by jon kosmoski. its got the lot in in like gun set up /how to do good prep.ect... wen you do your paint job make sue you paint all parts on the car to make sue you get the same amount of flake on job.do all undersides and door shutts first.when painting the car you need to walk the car dont do it bit by bit as you will get over lap marks a good flake to use is hok f20 but dont put it in the claer you will need some hok sg150 for that. i wud give the job 3 good coats of clear as you will need room to kolor sand.dont put to much red flake to the paint job as it will make the black look brown. i have done this paint job on a bmw 750i and pops in the sun big time. hope this helps.ride.jpg this is it hard to see on a pic. thanks der devil. I'm gonna try to look into that book. How is the How To section? It would be nice if somehow they could give you a trial of the section to see how you like it before you suscribe to it.

I just painted a mates Nissan Primera KH3 black. The variant they mixed was called Obsidian, if its the same as the Obsidian used on your car then it has a lot of blue in it. As blue and red makes purple, i would guess that would account for the semi purple look. If you respray it i would use a straight black like De Beer Special Black or something else without added tinters.

That looks really nice. Now if I wanted to color match the paint on my car, do you think any paint shop would have a system set up to determine the mixture of paint? Again I am new to the paint scene, so I would need as much direction as possible.

I agree with der devil. That kind of job needs a professional. It is really hard to make tri tone to a car.
