Hi, i just started out painting a few sport bike bits. I layed the primer down well, then the base and put on 2 coats of clear, one tacking coat one med/heavy coat. The problem i have now is that the final finished isnt to bad and has a little oranage peel but there doesnt seem to be much shiney to the paint, ie it has no depth. The paint seems to be quite thick aswell. The colour is kawasaki green. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif

Any help on how to get a nice mirror like finih would be good

Cheers :)

Depending on how bad the orange peel is, and how long the clear has hardened will tell you what grit to start with.

I sanded mine with 200 grit, but the paint had only cured for a day, and was pretty smooth to begin with. I wouldn't start with anything coarser than 1000 grit. then step to 1200, 1500, 2000. Sand in alternating directions, so you can tell when you have removed all the scratches from the previous grits, then buff, glaze, and hand glaze. That ought to bring out the shine.

Good luck holding those fairings!!

thanks, the parts had been cleared a few days ago so i started with 1500 and then went to 2500, damn it was hard work! buff'd the parts and now thay shine (wahhoooo) but i have some swirl marks, gonna get some hand glaze tonight to see if that clears them.

thanks :)

Glad to hear you got it flat and got the orange peel out. Sure makes life easier when you lay them out flat...keep it up and your day's coming.
The more orange peel you have, then more clear you need to take off to get the surface flat before buffing.

If you get a chance, but sure and use a 3M black fam pad and some 5996 and run it at about 1600 RPM's. This will really bring it out.
