newbie intercoat question

I'm working on a motorcycle helmet, and I've already painted the flames and now i'm putting some hawaiian floral designs on it. I have a faded background design painted, and now i want to put some larger hibiscus flowers above it that stick out more. My question is what do i need to put over the design so my masking won't peel off the pearl paint? Do those cheap spray cans of clear coat work as an intercoat, or would that be a stupid mistake? I was also wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what makes good masking paper, i have been using Badger's frisket film 8x11 sheets, but sometimes i think they are too sticky.

Don't trust the spraycan crap, use intercoat clear as long as you don't need the surface flat and any ripples from the last work wont ruin the next layer. On small stuff like that I just use masking tape but if you think it's too sticky just 'burn' it by rubbing your hand across the glue side a few times.
