hi, basically i'm a total newbie to spraying excect from spraying a few things with rattlecans etc. I know a lot of newbie questions are rather annoying so ill try to avoid asking stupid questions. Basically i want to start spraying by just refurbing my alloys as it doesnt matter to much if i mess them up because they were cheap. I have bought a 100L 3hp compressor. Im going to buy a spray gun and i have been told to use a HVLP one as they are much easier and require less pressure etc, is this true? I have started sanding my alloys but some bits had deep scratches so i had to sand down to the alloy, should i spray primer on these bits with just a rattle can or is it worth buying primer to go in the gun as there is only a few bits which need doing. Also, the alloys have alot of tight corners etc, which will be very hard to sand, could i just use paint stripper on them and then apply primer again or would this mess the finish up. That's most of my questions now ha, i watched numerous youtube videos to try and help me but non are as good as personal forum help. Thanks

Welcome,

Assuming you are comparing to a siphon fed gun, a HVLP (which stands for High Volume Low Pressure) does use less pressure.
If you are looking for a decent cheaper gun, Devilbiss has some.

I like Iwata's and SATAs, but I spray pretty much everyday.

Not for sure when you say 'easier' if you are comparing to a spray can?

I'm not for sure if you'll need to prime them. But if you want a decent paint job, I would suggest not using anything spray can.
Most everything sprayed through a gun is catalyzed (except for most basecoats), so they hold up better.
You shouldn't spray basecoat/clearcoats over spray can or lacquer primer.

Ok thanks that helped a lot, but i'm still unclear on whether i should use paint stripper as there are some very tight and complex corners on the alloys which i will struggle to get sand paper into, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Without seeing, I would probably have to say I would do without the stripping as this could be a messy job if not done correctly. You may end us still having to remove all the paint stripper/paint from the corners.

Possibly just use a red scotchbright in the corners.
