I'm kinda new to painting I've messed around with bodywork for a long time but only painted a few times. Anyway I've shaved the engine bay on my car and want to spray it in a chekerboard pattern. Similar to this.

Once the base is layed how long should i wait to start masking?
If I need to wait longer than 24 hours before masking what should I sand with?
What materials and techniques would you recomend to mask this type of design?
Do I need to clear inbetween colors? Intercoat or finish?
Everything I've used has been omni products up to this point if that makes a difference.
Thanks, Ryan

Base Coat- chemically bonds to itself when you paint, unless you wait for over 24 hrs, then it looses its bonding ability.
It should tell you on the can how long to wait before masking. depending on the temp. and amout of paint layers 10 to 20 min.

checkerboards are hard. and time consuming.
1) I like to run 2 (1/4" blue 3m) lines parellel and touching for each line. fill in the squares that you don't want to paint w/ tape, then cut the inner edge of the tape that is in the square you do want to paint. this will give you equal squares, and the corners that touch.

2) or take 1/8 inch tape and run the patterns w/ a single stripe and cover the squares that you don't want to paint w/ masking tape. The corners of the painted boxes won't touch, but it is easier to do.

some people intercoat between colors so that they can sand off mistakes. It is hard to sand off base to base because of the chemical bond. If you intercoat i'd let it set for 24 hrs before masking. I don't usually use an intercoat unless i'm stacking graphics. if you paint something over the checkers you'll need to intercoat first so that your checkerboard lines don't show in the second graphic.

I'm not a moderator, so correct my mistakes guys, but this is what i've learned from this helpful site so far. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
