Complete noob question, Im going to be restoring a 1976 Spitfire and most things will be back to bare meatal. Im wondering what type of primer to use on the bare metal prior to painting. It will just be a standard cream paint nothing special.
Ive seen a few different primers mentioned in different places and the search function brings up more specific question but is there a general rule of what primers are used for what?

Also when using filler should it be to bare metal or something on there first then the filler then primer over the filler?

If you have a lot of bodywork and you feel you can get it done fairly quickly, you can do so, then prime it.
If you are stripping your car and there is not a lot of bodywork or it's going to take a while to get to, go ahead and prime first, then you can go back and do the bodywork.
Or, you can do one or two panels at a time. Strip them, do the bodywork. Then prime.
Pretty much any good grade epoxy primer will be fine. You can figure anywhere from $100-$225 for a gallon including the hardener and reducer.
