I have a Mac hvlp sprayer at home and in the past I have tried to spray some polyester primer with the gun. The primer was way to thick. It barely came out of the gun. Well now I want to learn how to paint a car and I want to use urethane type paints. So Im still learning everything but I need to find out how to spray the primer so I can practice. The gun has a 1.5 tip. Is that what is common and it will work for urathane? Should I thin out the primer with something or do I need another tip? Or last am I just not doing anything right and I should be able to paint and primer with a 1.5 and not do any thining out of the paint or primer. I know this question is probably alot but Im wanting to get some primer in the gun to practice spraying it. Is the polyester primer thicker than urethane?? Thanks

Yes poly primer is thicker then urethane. I have not had much luck spraying poly with anything other then a 2.0 tip. Reg urethane 2k primer will spray from a 1.5 tip but you might need to reduce it to get it to lay down nice. I prefer a 1.8 for any urethane 2k primers.
If you are spraying single stage enamel or urethane paint a 1.5 tip will work ok. If you are spraying base coat a 1.5 will be on the big side. 1.3 works good for base coats. I have never shot clear out of a 1.5 tip so I can't say what type of results you'll get. I prefer a 1.4 tip for clear but that is using my iwata or sata guns. My devilbiss hvlp gun sprays clears better with a 1.6 then a 1.4 but I prefer to use my Iwata for clear. And keep the devil for single stage paint.
