I went and bought the Dupont White pearl pn 1001S, along with a quart of binder.

Approx how much pearl should I mix in a quart of binder to spray ghost flames over a solid maroon base??

One of the paints I looked at was MICA White, and they called for like 4.5g gold pearl and 5.5g white pearl per quart. Should I mix 9 or 10 grams into a quart and shoot a test panel?

I only have a quart of binder and don't want to waste too much......

If that Mica white was the pearl coat of a tristage car color it'll be way too strong for ghosting.Pour off 1/2 a pint and play with this.I like the cheap 'wire' can openers with the hook at the tip.Dip this in the pearl and just fill the hook and dump it in and mix it up.What you see on the stick will be equivolent to a few coats but don't let it fool you, over a dark base like that red it will show up fast.Thin it down and spray some out on the red.Now you have a base formula to work with. Not enough add another scoop, too much add more clear-but do small test panels so the amount you use doesn't throw it off much.Once you get the mix just make more and forget the reducer in the equasion.ie:if 2 scoops in the 1/2 pint worked but reduced at 100% you have a pint less the little you sprayed,it's still 2 scoops/1/2 pint or 4/pint.Guessing weight wise I'd say start with .5g/pint for ghosting and go in .1-.2g from there.Unless you want only one coat of pearl you can do 2 or 3 if it looks a little weak instead of playing with it more, then again if 2 is good double your formula and you have it in one coat.Hope I didn't confuse you.

Thx for the info..... Sounds like I would have wasted a lot of material, and that I didn't need to buy the 150 grams of pearl that I got! LOL!

This is the part that is hard to me, the experimenting. I will just have to take it slow and make lots of test panels....

Thanks again! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif

Remember I'm just guessing here because I just wing it.You didn't waste anything buying the amount you did because you'll either play with some of it to get a base for your idea of formulations or you'll use it later on something else.Figure at least once a year prices increase and last I knew 3M was working on quarterly pricingThis was quite a while ago but I'm sure it's still the same.Better material profit next time this way.

I have found that the average rule is 1gram to 3 oz of clear then reduce with just a little more than called for not much though. Listen to Rex shoot test panel white over maroon will stand out drasticly good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/peace.gif
