Opps.... set off the neighbors

I've been blowing off painting this dune buggy for a freind of mine. Finally painted it yesterday and went through 4 quarts of paint. They smelled it and ask if I could filter it some how. I installed 2 filters with activated charcol in between them. I cleared this morning and that really didn't help much. My shop has a huge squirl cage that bring filtered air in to the shop for a positive pressure enviroment. I was thinking about mounting a series of water misters around some kind of large tube or box where the air is discharged to perhaps water wash the air as it comes out. Does this make any sense?? Anybody have any other methods of getting clean air out??

Appreciate any help... don't really need the code enforcer out here. Or I'll get some of what this guy is doing

So this isn't the neighbor's buggy??

Do they need something painted!! LOL!!

You don't say how close your neighbor's are to your shop or in what proximity. I live on a corner and the nearest house is easily 75 yards away - but the wind is always blowin from his house to mine!!

The problem as I see it, is that VOC's are heavier than air (I also own a print shop and am familier with solvents... in printing) anyway - Since you're using a Pressurized booth the dirty air isn't really being dissapated as it leaves and therefore is lingering on the ground level an floating toward you neighbor's house.
I would pick up another fan and use it as an exhaust with a 45 degree bend at the end of it pointing upward and see if that doesn't make a differance. Besides it'll help keep your booth that much clearer --- Good Luck - Bones~

Yep... they live pretty close. Shop is only 3 feet from there fence line. Generally a south wind that blows at right angle to them and we are at the north end of there property. I'm not gonna critisize them for complaining. They have the grad kids visiting and spend a lot time at there pool. But, I just don't think pushing air up is gonna please them Bones. I want and need utterley confirmed clean air leaving the shop. I have had freinds come over and smell paint in the house and the shop is 75' away. I'll think about it

Water baths do work.Set up a hose above and outside your exhaust filter (so it doesn't get wet) and poke small holes in it to get a solid heavy mist over the opening.I haven't used one but I know a few people that do it at home without an exhaust filter. You're real close so I'd use a filter.

I use a three filter setup. One at the area I'm spraying, one before and one after the squirrel cage. All are charcoal filters and I have the exhaust go out on the roof. I have a two floor garage so it gets up pretty high.I have had no complaints yet. My house is about 30 feet from the garage and you can't smell it inside.

Hey Twisted.... Where did you get the carbon filters? Probably a dumb question but, never saw them a Home Depot. Also.... can you or have you been able to smell it outside of your shop??

Some friends run a body shop and I get the filters from them. I'll ask them who they get them from.
You can get a little bit of the smell outside but it is just about as much as painting a model car with a spray can.
I don't get along with my nieghbors and they don't complain. They get bent out of shape if I fire up the air compresser at 2am but I can understand that.
I finally will be moving into my new shop in August.

I have the booth done and the ventilation in. All thats left is the benches and shelving. It's not in a residential area so the smell won't be a problem. I also just got a local custom bike builder to let me paint some bikes for him. He makes Jesse James look like an amateur.

Are you guys talking about a professional style booth or what? I'm getting ready to build a shop big enough for a professional booth inside. But I am in a residential area and don't want to offend anyone (read "don't want to get my backside in trouble with the county..."). Do the pro booths have exhaust smell probs? I've been around commercial booths and haven't smelled anything but I'm probably used to the paint smell. Please and thanks for more elaboration.

The pre made booths sre designed to get the air out of the spraying area. You still have to use a good quality filter to eliminate the oder outside the booth. Activated charcoal or carbon filters are the best I have found to eliminate most of the oder.

Twisted.... if you find out where to get the filters... PLEASE let me know. I considered moving from my shop, in the back yard, to the garage. Lots of logostics to work out though. AC, dirt and what to do with all of the stuff in the garage. I'd rather keep painting right where I am.

Thanks
