Orange peel problems

I keep having problems with orange peel. I use UC-35 w a medium reducer (311). Are you guys shooting the 2nd coat when the previous coat is stringy or waiting longer or what?:ears:

Tired of buffing...

Bob increase your reducer by 20%, wait for it to be tacky NOT STRINGY, or it won't flow out. Candy's seem to take a good long time to flow depending on the heat and humidity. If you shoot over it before it gets tacky it will knot up.

Also, depends on your gun settings, play around with them...maybe you have too much or too little of material coming out. You could also be holding the gun back too far from the surface.

I know it's an "art" and hard to describe in words but HOK always said to hit it with a medium coat that will flash quick to start with. This will create little "mountains" that subsequent coats will grab to. Then, shoot wet coats of clear waiting between coats for the tackyness to get to the point that when you touch it gently, the clear strings out when you remove your finger. I think "tacky" is drier than this so I'll give it a try.

Tks,

Clearcoat

When I put clear on, like ppg.DAU-75, I don't use a reducer. I use the recomended amount of wet look hardener and I spray as evenly as I can. The flash time between coats is really important. I turn my fan off when I clear so cool air dosen't flow across the material and speed up the drying time.

Good Luck

The biggest improvement for me in reducing orange peel happened when I increased the air volume to my booth (bigger plumbing). This, along with the overreducing previously mentioned get me a pretty glossy finish that makes the sanding a much easier job. BTW, the extra reducer means extra coats.

With the UC-35 follow the instructions. i.e. do not shoot the next coat until the previous coat does not string, you simply wait till you get a fingerprint, no stringing.
