Orange peel

Some advice guys,
Painted some tank and fenders yesterday with HOK Met blue , then layed some Candy Cobalt Koncertrate mix with SG-100,1 to 1. I sprayed with a 1.4 gun I just bought fairly inexpensive, and had 21 psi at reg. which translate to 10 at tip. I tried like hell to lay it down smooth but just couldnt get it nice . I then sprayed two coat of SG-100 2to 1 straight, with same results, bad orange peel.I am a novice, but seemed to me the air flow was to low. Really seemed it was falling out not spraying out. Does this sound right. How should I go about knocking down the orange peel, 800 bgrit sound good, and should I up the psi at reg.By the way I used a fast reducer @ 72* degrees if that helps.
Thanks ,

Mission,21psi is pretty low.Try 35ish for base.I clear at 42psi(non HVLP) now with very good results.also,I have much better luck with a the slow reducer, even in warmer weather,it gives the clear time to flowout.you'll run it if your not careful but for me,it sure helped alot.Jim

800 wet sounds good, even 600 if your gonna throw on another couple of coats otherwise,800,1200,1500 and buff!21psi still sounds low!I'd bump it up a bit to 30 and give it a try or maybe a smaller tip.Maybe someone who uses hvlp will jump in with some advice.

Just to clarify Im at the intercoat clear, was on the way to tapin out my flames. When I was sprayin on the candy (2 coats)I sort of notice the spray promblem, but continued anyway(dumbass)then spayed two coats of SG-100 intercoat, and really notice the peel due to the high clear to reducer ratio 2 to 1 . Need to get out thes peel ,but need to get down some. Anyone chime in.

Mike,I'm guesing you put intercoat on the candy to do your flames,If the peel isn't really thick, don't worry about it,your final clear will fill it and then you'll flatten it with the final sand and buff stage.Otherwise, sand the intercoat and re shoot another coat. Before you spay again, boost your pressure and do some test panels to see if your getting rid of the peel.A 1.4 tip at 21psi is like pouring it on,there isn't enough air pressure to atomize it.Like Rex says, your shooting bowling balls instead of bb's,you want those droplets to be as small as possible so, forget those directions and crank up your pressure,Jim

Thanks Jim for info ,I gonna sand light with 800 on all then spray another coat of SG-100 on with higher psi like you suggested.

Well heres the deal, I sanded with 800 and broke through in a few spots. I know, you told me so,sprayed Met blue two coats AGAIN, layed down some Kandy Colbalt with higher psi around 40, then SG-100 two coat same psi. Came out much nicer, sanded oh so lightly today wtih 500. Gonna tape out some fire tomorrow. Thanks for the help, will send in some photos when done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yikes02.gif

At 40psi,your probably defeating the HVLP and getting more overspray than you should but,you can play with it, finding the perfect psi later, glad it's working out for ya.A 1.4 tip is pretty large and puts it on quickly. If I want something smaller to really look good,I use the 1.2 but,you have to move slow to get coverage.I use 1.3 or 1.4 for larger areas and move faster.Reducers play a big part with the clear (or candy) too,for me,a slower reducer flows my clear better(minimal peel) but,I have to be careful not to load it on too much,it'll run if I go too heavy.Good luck and post them pics when your done,Jim /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif
