A varmit got into the garage the other night and caused three minor scratches on the fuel tank of the motorcycle. (One of the few times that I didn't cover the bike when I parked it for the night) For reference, it's the paint job shown on job 98 on this website.

One of the scratches is only on the clear coat and is about 1/2" in length and it's on the black area, the other two scratches are 1/4" and to the metal in the blue ghost flame area.

My question is, what can I do to preserve the tank and keep it from rusting in these areas. I am not a painter, so any help/advice will be appreciated. A friend advised to use clear nail polish, I can see where that might be ok on the clear coat scratch but not on the two that are to the metal.

Again, any help will be appreciated.

The nailpolish is a decent quick fix. Probably the easiest and cheapest way to go. I am guessing you dont want to or can't do a spot repair with an airbrush. For the spots that are to the metal just get a color that matches what is already there. Be careful because most nailpolish is laquer and it reacts kind of funny over top of anything but laquer.( I have done urethane over laquer without problems but it doesn't work the other way around.) see if you can find enamel instead. Model car paint might work also.

Trick for the black??? use single stage black with hardner and brush touch the scratch, after it hardens sand it flat with 600 grit move up to 1000/1500 and polish....may be slightly noticable??? for the other scratches sand with 1500 & hand polish???
good luck
