Outline

Hey, I just wanted to say that this is the best resource I have found for painting flames and, well, automotive painting altogether. I'm new to it and this is a big help.

I was, however, wondering how to paint an outline to the flames, like the truck hood on the 'Samples of Work' page. Do I have to paint the flames first and then mask off the inside of the flames also and paint just the outline? or is there an easier way?

Thanx!

P.S. How would I do a fade effect all around the inside edge of the flame? Thanx again!

Sorry, You don't need to answer the part about outlining the flames. I didn't notice the other topics on it when I posted.
But I would still like to know, is there an easy way to do a fade effect around the inside edge of the flame, without having to airbrush it?

Basically you would just "fade" the color from one to another, then when you tape it up (with either 1/8" or 1/16" blue plastic tape), then do your flames and remove the tape, "presto" you will have a faded flame border.

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough when I said a fade effect, maybe I used the wrong terminology, but I meant like this:

Scott, Great looking job on the tank. Just so I understand correctly.
1. Paint surface to be flamed base color.
2.Tape off flame design.
3.Spray the gold and fade in the tip color
4.Tape border with fine line tape
5.Spray inside color of flame
6.Remove all tape and clear

Does this sound correct? Tired of fighting with pin stripe brushes. Thanks Russ

Correct Rad!
Sorry for the delay in the response. I missed this post. Hope you got it figured out. Looks like you did.

One thing though, just as a precaution, when you spray the border color, then lay out the inner 1/8" stripe (or 1/16"), you might want to be sure and lay another 1/4" between the actual flame layout and the border fineline (you will have two 1/8" stripes right next to each other. The reason is because if there is any gap, you will end up with your flame color outside your border--make sense?! Once you lay it out, I'm sure you will see what I mean.

Here is my most recent job that I did this way.
