I have messed around with painting three tone flames , i.e. red and orange flames with light blue outline but my prosses seemed to be flawed . I painted a base coat then i painted a rough set of flames with blue then masked with 1/4 in. flames and outside my flames, painted red and orange let it dry then masked off my flames and painted the rest of my hood
the finnished product was pretty cool but it seemed like there is an easyer way........... any suggestions ??

You could always just do the flame job, clear it, then do a regular pinstriping job over it to hide the flame edge.

Most of the time, I do it the way you talked about. A couple of things you have to watch when doing so it paint thickess and also keeping the colors from "rolling over".

Next time, you also might want to use 3/32" tape, or 1/16" tape. 1/4" tape to use to cover the outline is pretty wide and harder to control.
Possibly this was the main problem you had
