Overlapping flames

I have been a collision repair painter for about 9 years now and have done a handful of flames jobs. Interested in trying an overlapping job, can someone give me the low down? Do you tape them off like you want them to look, then cut out the finieline on the overlaps, or are most people using some kind of masking film, and cutting them with a blade?
I guess my thought process would be fineline, then cout out the overlaps, then comeback and stripe those areas, or if yer real good like alot of you all are, come back with an airbrush and shadow it? Thanks in advance

You said "I guess my thought process would be fineline, then cout out the overlaps, then comeback and stripe those areas, or if yer real good like alot of you all are, come back with an airbrush and shadow it?" That is how I do it.
