Paint over new paint

You can do it that way but I'll warn you it takes alot of patience to scuff right up to the tape, especially in the end of the tips.Besides the fact you'll have a hellatious edge whether you use single stage or base/clear,you'll likely ruin the crisp edge of the tape.Your best bet is to 800 wetsand the whole part, lay down your flames and then clear the whole thing. If you're not too worried about the tape edge the clear will melt it out some anyway. The exception to this is if your part is a metalic or pearl done in singlestage (no clearcoat). Then you don't want to sand it but lightly scuff it with a wet grey scotchbrite pad to avoid burning the matalic or pearl.Welcome to the site also

Say for example I have a new factory paint job and I want to do a small flame job. How do I prepare the area that is going to be painted over the new paint. Do I tape off the flames and then scotch brite the area between the tape?
