Does anyone else have problems with paint peeling and flaking around the gas caps. Is there anyway of preventing this.
Thanks

Did you tape off the filler hole? If you did and it still peeled then either the gas cap is not sealing or you taped off to close to the inside of the filler hole - Make sure when your clients bring you tank to paint they also bring the gas caps so you know what style of cap they have -- I put the cap on and then look to see where I should tape off at and have never had one peel due to the masking techniques. There's a guy in my area that thinks he's a custom painter and dogs my name every chance he gets - EVERY tank he has painted has leaked around the caps and then his customers come to me to have them fixed, so I guess that makes up for him runnin his mouth about me!!!! Idiots Crack Me Up!! --- Bones!~

Kosmoski (House of Kolor founder) says that the gas cap should seal against bare metal, so don't get it too close.

They're correct after painting. If you're having the problem during untaping either the prep was bad or you have too much paint to break cleanly when you untape it.This is common if you have from the first coat of primer to say a second clearing.I sand my primer down into the tape and redo it.After each clearing I redo it again. If I'm Getting thick I sand back into the tape before reclearing the last time.If it's still thick when done I'll bust the edge down some more before I seal it.If you don't want to go thru all this carefully sand the paint until you find the edge of the tape and run a blade around the edge of the tape before you pull it.

Masking back from the edge is great, but i like to overlap my clear over the primer/color edge onto bare metal to seal the paint. Primers and base are very pores and will wick spilled gas or vapers under the clear if it isn't sealed. This can cause lifting after some time.

I painted and cleared into the filler hole, down about 1/8th of an inch. and then sealed the edges with epoxy, I havent any problems yet but its only been about 3 months. What do you think, will it hold or delaminate?

I would have used clear or nail polish to seal the edge instead of epoxy. If it's epoxy primer it's probably porous like most primers.I don't think you'll have a problem but be carefull with the filler nozzle you smacking it and chipping it.
