Paint Shop & Paint Stands

This is a 2 part post. First off....I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a picture of a good paint/buffing stand for fenders, tanks and HELMETS?
Next....I just bought a house with a rough shop in the back that I want to convert to an effective spray booth. It's about 12'X15'X8'. The structure is just framed out with wooden siding on the outside. It also has power wired in. I am in the construction & welding industry, so I can do the work. I would just like to get some real good advise on a COST EFFECTIVE means of converting what seems to be a perfect place to paint motorcycle parts. First addition to it should be some means to vetilate and filter. Please Help.

If you're in the welding industry as you say why not fab up some paint stands. That's what I did. I stopped at a tire shop on the way home and they gave me a used donut tire wheel. I then hit the metal shop and picked up some 2" square tubing and some round pipe that fit inside it. I welded a 2.5' section of the square tube to the donut wheel. For pretty cheap you can weld some specific tank/fender holders to the round tube. Then just slide it into the square tubing and you've got a stand that can easily rotate. I drilled some holes in the square tube so I can slide a bolt through and adjust the height of the stand. I was able to use mine for painting and buffing and they've worked great. I can post a photo if anyone's interested. Scott has a writeup on this site about some home-made stands as well.

Can't help you on the paint booth. I'm using a make shift one out of painter's 6 mil plastic and some pulleys. I plan on posting photos of that at some time as well.

Thanks for the reply. i have seen and printed the post on paint stands and they are great. i was just wondering if anyone has fabricated any custom stands. i am trying to get a visual of Stretch's stands. I'm not sure if what I have in my mind is what your talking about, but i would really appreciate it if you could post pics. Thanks so much for your input.

I'll try to get some shots tonight and post them. They could use some revisions but they've worked great thus far.

Just so you know, I've only been welding a few months so don't look at the welds, I'm sure they're not pretty but this should give you an idea of what can easily be done for a paint stand.

This particular stand was for a Honda VTX tank. I painted and buffed it out on this stand without a problem. When I make my next stand I'll do a few things different. First I think I'll also drill a hole in the round tubing so that I could put a bolt thru both vertical pieces to lock it and prevent it from turning while buffing. Also I think I'll just weld the horizontal piece to the round tube. I went the extra step and welded a nut into the round tube and a bolt to the bottom of the horizontal bar. The thought was that I could just switch out top pieces when needed. I think i'd rather just have that all be one piece for more stability. Although this design worked I don't like the fact that all the weight of the tank is on that one nut and bolt.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Great ideas. I do like the iidea of trying to find a way to switch out the top piece for various parts. Maybe if you take a piece of square tubing (approx. 4") and weld it to the bottom of top piece and drill a hole all the way through the square and round tubing of the parts, you could then secure them with pins that go all the way through. This would provide a real quick way of removing and adding various top pieces. I have some more ideas that would probably help. I'll post them soon. I think we could perfect this thing.

Yeah, it's not perfect but it's worked out well thus far. Definitely post your ideas, I'd like to get it working better and I'm sure this is something quite a few people could easily do for their own paint shops.

I got the donut wheel for free and was able to pick up some scrap metal for next to nothing.

I havent had time to fabricate it yet, but I have an idea of using a stand similar to the one pictured but with two padded pieces sticking up on top in a "V" configuration so that a fender (motorcycle) will find its own balanced spot Hope Im expressing this clearly and like I say its just in the idea stage.
