Paint Splatter?? Help needed please!

Hi,
I am a newbie to custom painting, I have decided to paint my old crash helmet.
I purchased a second hand Sata Minijet 4 and a range of Auto Air Color paints.

I prepped the helmet, degreased masked, and went over with a tack rag..... ready to paint.

I poured Auto Air sealer white into my spray gun, and adjusted the fan and spray pressure to max of 29 psi as it says on the gun.

I began painting with an pretty bad finish to be honest. I wanted to do a light first coat and then a second coat to cover.

The paint seem to be coming out of the gun lumpy?? and now it has dried it has a rough feel to it, so going to have to flat it and start again! :sillyme:

I adjusted the air pressure to 40psi, and have continuosly adjusted the spray pattern until it was spraying a nice fine coat but no joy. The gun has a 1.0 set up and was wondering if the paint needs to be reduced?

I have been watching the auto air user guide dvd and he seems to use 1.2 set up guns, and paints wide open at 45psi?

I hope some of you guys can help in resolving my problem.

Kind regards

Deano

Sounds like the paint may have been too thick. I usually reduce my paint a bit more when I use my touch-up guns. Also, since it was used, it may have had a dirty cap? That might give you spattering, too. I'd do a major cleaning of the gun first. Get the insides spotless, and assemble it carefully, being sure to tighten down the cap and nozzle well. Air leaking into them will give you sporadic pattern.
Once that's done, try again. But it is ALWAYS a good idea to set up your gun correctly by spraying out patterns on a piece of masking paper, or such. This will tell you if all is working correctly, and your paint mix is good. So you dont' make mistakes on the object you are painting!
