Paint stands / 'Convertible ' Spray booth

Hi Guys!!
Just wanted to say thanks to this forum I just finished fabricating my paint stands. About $64 and 4 1/2 hours and I have 2 fender stands and a tank stand. Kudos to TAZ for his description in an earlier post that I found! I did tweak the tank stand so I can adjust it to fit different size tanks. Not familiar with HD tanks so I'm thinking this might apply mostly to metric bikes?!?. Here's the break down on cost for the stands:
Roller stand - Big Lots $10 ea x 3
1" square steel tubing 4' - $10.47
3/4" suqre tubing 4' $11.00
Slotted 2" flat steel 6' $6.51
Screws $.98
Pipe insulation 1.38
plus tax 53.30
The fender stands are just as TAZ described (or at least how I understood his description :yesnod01:)
On the tank stand I used the 1" square tubing for the 'spine' and made a T out of the 3/4 tubing and 1" tubing so the 3/4 end would slide into the 1" spine. I made 2 different sizes to fit a couple tanks I am going to paint.

I also used some of the slotted flat stock, bent in an "L" shape to use as a spacer on 2 sides of the 3/4 T leg so it fit better in the 1" spine.

I also added a peg at the tail of the spine so I could slip the tank mounting hole over it..added some extra holes for adjustability...

Here's the tank stand without the pads.

And all the stands loaded and ready to go...

I also built a 'convertible ' spray booth last year. Since garage space is always at a premium, I found a way to build a 8x12 booth that easily converts from booth to 'garage mode' so you can still have space for your 'stuff'. Here's a couple pics of it in 'garage mode' and 'paint mode'....

There's a bunch more pics of the stands and the booth here

Browse and feel free to 'borrow' anything you see ...idea wise I mean..:haha:
Thanks again for access to a GREAT forum!!!

Thanks TAZ :yesnod:
The tank stand wasn't as solid as I would like it to be ....so today at work I thought up a better idea. After work I went and got a piece of 1 1/4 black pipe, some springs and 2 3/4" electrical conduit splicers (all at home depot..)and came up with this instead....

Cut and welded the 1 1/4 black pipe on the end of the main 'spine'

Spring loaded the main sleeve...

tankb1.jpg

Made some spring caps out of conduit splice....and tack welded a plug in the center..

tankb2.jpg

Now the front mount is spring loaded and holds the tank much firmer!! I'll put some duct tape on the caps to keep them from scrtching the underside...

tankb5.jpg

You'll also notice the small silver screw in the bottom center of the main sleeve. The screw extends up into the spring to keep it centered.
Thanks again for the info to get me headed in the right direction..!!!! I love this forum :moon:

Looks great. I like to know more about the air movment? Do you use some kind of filters and how does that wall mounted furnace fan move the air?

Thanks Den

Thanks Denny,
In the 'paint mode' pic I didn't have the ventilation done yet. Here's where I put a furnace filter bracket on the inside of the room.

ventilation4.jpg

The 'blower' is an old furnace squirrel cage. I am going to play with the pulley sizes to increase the cage rpm's which will increase the volume of air it moves..

ventilation1.jpg

I braced up the opening around the 'mouth' of the blower so air would be forced outside and couldn't just recirculate around the room. Then the 'scary' part... I cut a hole through the wall of the garage ( Actuall I cut t he hole first...duh me....I made sure I had some pieces of matching siding in case I had to abort and cover my mess... :sillyme:)
Then I got a louvered attic vent and put that on the outside.

ventilation2.jpg

Then when the blower is on....

ventilation3.jpg

And if I need additional air circulation I duct tape filters in the window...yeah yeah....I can Mcguyver wit da best of dem!!:bounce: lol

Hope that answers your questions Big D....

Bnemo, best layout of stands I have seen to date, for a budget newbie like me the pics are fantastic. Don't know if you will actually jump on and read this but my thanks. Have the same thing in mind for upstate ny garage , only I need heat, which, fortunately for me , I just came into posesion of an oil burning furnace from my son who converted to a natural gas one in his house. now for the insulation and building . lol.

I did a How-To (step by step with pics) on building a parts rack for under $25 (probably more now) about 6 years ago. This is in the How-To section though which is a subscription based forum section (the only section which you would have to subscribe to to enter)

Bnemo did a great job of adding to it

Nice work Bnemo!

I've been thinking of doing something similar in my garage too. Just curious though, are you using a negative or positive air pressure in the booth? It looks to me that it is negative since you are ****ing air to the outside through the blower. And then I am wondering is that fan protected against an explosion with a spark to paint vapors?
