Painting a tank from start to finish?!?

I've been rebuilding a 1979 Suzuki GS 750 and the time has come to paint the tank. I'm new to doing the pro spray job, and would just like any tips or tricks that come with experience. I have a spray gun and access to a spray booth and have already completely stripped the tank, applied body filler where needed and sanded. I am to move onto the priming and painting. I've chosen a Sherwin Williams Candy Apple Red. Any notes on preperation and application would be greatly appreciated. My major concerns are of applying the correct number of layers for my base, mid coat and top coat!

go to where you got your sherwin williams paint and ask for the tech sheet on the paint application. they will give you what works best for that paint. the primmer and all the steps to use.

that'd be my suggestion.

i agree with hoss on that.while you are there ask them for some two part high build primmer and tech sheet.after primmer is dry sand with 400 grit sand paper.if you rub through prime again or spot prime rub throughs.a quick skiff over with 600 after the 400 helps(no rub throughs).are you using base clear or single stage?? let us know and we will continue.cyas

I'm working with a base, mid and clear. I just layed down the two part primer which looks beautiful. I'll let it cure overnight and then sand tomorrow.
