Painting Aluminum or Steel

I've got a potential customer that wants some metal emblems painted. One piece is a pointer cover with a logo etched into it and he wants that painted black.

I was thinking mask off around the letters, spray some adhesion promoter, black base, then clear. Does this sound right? Any advice from those that have done something similar before?

I'm not sure how to not paint the sides of the letters (the indented part if that makes sense?). Any suggestions?

I guess I could always do it by hand...

Thanks-Scott

Just use One shot with a brush, by hand. It should hold up pretty good!! -- Bones!~

Naaaa --- One Shot is great for that kinda stuff -- just don't drink it - its got more lead in it than a pencil!!!

Nothing in paint will hold to new aluminum without an acid treatment or an acid etching primer. A quick fix is lay some vinyl back and then scuff, paint and clear it. I shot krylon on a new streetsign last year, and it came right off the next day...........bronzeo

This project would be painting the recessed letters on a motorcycle point cover so I can't easily sand nor apply vinly???

Here's what I did,I got some HD touch up paint, get a soft thin rag(I used a t-shirt ).Paint in the recess and quickly, wrap the rag tight around my finger in one layer, wipe nice and flat and presto, clean lines with paint left in the recess.Don't press too hard and don't use anything thick like terrycloth. The only time it came off is when I cleaned the wax out with a toothbrush. It may stick better with enamel. You may try and use one of those sanding pencils, they have a pretty small tip.
