Painting an Aluminum Fishing Boat

I have a question about painting my Aluminum fishing boat. I have heard from somewhere, don't remember where, that you need to use a special type of paint, otherwise it will just peal off.

Does anyone know what I need to do to prep and what type of paint I need to use? or can I just rough it up and prime and paint it?

Thanks for any help.

I might be wrong on what green self-etching primer you guys are talking about, but I have used something similar. If I am not mistaken, it is made by Dupont and is called vera- prime or something like that.

Thanks for the info. I read somewhere to use a Vinyl wash primer.

Is there a specific name for the green etch primer?

ask your jober for zink chromate primer.this stuff goes on real thin .dont try to build it.thin is good.check with your jobber but i think you go strait to paint.no sanding.cyas

i would still use zinc chromate primer.or at least one coat of epoxy.wet on wet.just wait about one hour and top coat.no sanding required

I talked to my local NAPA store, and they said to use the etch primer, and then topcoat. I think I will try that.

I need to finish the trailer first. I should have that done next week. It's camping season now, so all that fun time gets in the way.

Thanks for all your help.
